    Electric Vehicle Lithium Battery Electrode-Film-Thickness Quality Control

    Challenge:  During the lithium battery manufacturing process, quality control is critical to reduce downtime and scrap: It’s also necessary to maintain high quality standards so the finished product functions as intended for its useful life. One crucial measurement occurs just after the electrode material film has been applied to the separator, and then once again after the calendering process.  At these points, it’s critical to measure the electrode film thickness to determine if it was applied correctly, evenly, and whether any is missing. With a total material thickness of only 0.070mm, a precision sensor is required.

    Solution: Banner’s LM series non-contact laser sensor can measure the precise runout on challenging targets. The LM’s precise resolution of 0.002 mm and small spot size can identify subtle changes in distance that could indicate missing or uneven electrode application. With traditional sensors, these distance changes could be missed or lead to false failures. The LM sensor was designed with dynamic power adjustment for consistent readings across shiny or dark surfaces, providing less variation and a more reliable inspection.

    The LM laser measurement sensor is capable of a 0.5 millisecond response speed to quickly identify problems and reduce overall inspection time. As the battery-electrode film moves, the sensor tracks the measurements instantly and accurately. The LM sensor features a thermally stable design that minimizes effects from temperature changes, has superior mounting stability, and performs accurately in difficult environments.

    LM series sensors can be configured via IO-Link, remote input wire, or the optional remote sensor display (RSD). The RSD configuration tool stores sensor settings and uses one display to setup many sensors. The RSD configures sensors up to 20 meters away and features a 2-line, 8-character display. This function is ideal for both OEMs and end users that install sensors on multiple machines.
